Tobey Hospital Emergency Department Expansion

Wareham, MA

Project Overview

Suffolk was selected to complete the renovation and addition to Tobey Hospital’s existing Emergency Department (ED).

The project includes a 22,000 SF addition as well as 8,000 SF of renovations. The new ED houses almost twice the amount of patient rooms and provides the capability of serving up to 40,000 patients per year, over twice the capacity of the hospital’s previous ED.

As part of prep work, and in order to ensure minimal disruption to the hospital’s daily operations, site utilities were relocated and a 10,000 SF temporary ED and ambulance bay were created while the project was underway.

Modifications and additions to the former Labor and Delivery Department of the hospital served as the temporary ED. This included: 12 patient beds, a trauma room, a two-bed treatment room, nurse management offices, a staff break room and bathroom, and a waiting room. This strategic decision reduced the project from three phases down to one and provided 12 overflow observation/treatment bays for future use.

HVAC adjustments were made in order to accommodate room usage, and two new exhaust systems were added – one for a treatment room converted to an isolation room and the other for segregation of the waiting room exhaust air to other building air flow.
