Boston University

Center for Computing & Data Sciences - Boston, MA

Project Overview

The Center for Computing & Data Sciences at Boston University will be a new 19-story, 350,000-gsf iconic building on the Charles River Campus.

Designed by renowned Canadian architecture firm KPMB, the tower is set above a podium to mitigate its impact on the busy street and align with other buildings along Commonwealth Avenue. The tower organizes a series of floorplates that are shifted and cantilevered around a central core to break down the overall scale of the building. This unique landmark now serves as its own 鈥渧ertical campus鈥 providing Boston University鈥檚 rapidly expanding mathematics and computational sciences programs with classrooms, labs, and amenity spaces for independent and collaborative study, research and socialization. The Hariri Institute for data-driven research, s located in the 19-story building has served as an incubator and convergence accelerator for the university since 2012.

Opened in 2022, Suffolk implemented creative solutions for constructing the complex building on such a tight site with no lay-down area. Experience with similar projects in an urban setting were key to the client鈥檚 selection of the Suffolk team. Ultimately, this iconic and dynamic building not only serve to attract the best and brightest data sciences students from around the world, but has transformed the BU skyline, particularly when viewed from across the Charles River.
